Moscow names a square after Moscow Metro

Moscow named a garden square in the historic Sokolniki district after Moscow Metro, reports the city’s Department of Transport. The square connects Sokolnicheskaya Square and Sokolnicheskaya Zastava Square. According to the authority, tens of thousands of people will pass through the Moscow Metro Square every day after the reconstruction works are completed. The street will be pedestrian, with recreation zone and lanterns along a linden alley.

It is a landmark place — it is here that the Moscow Metro’s past meets present. In 1935, one of the first metro stations — Sokolniki — opened here and the first train left from here. Next year, the eponymous station of the Big Circle Line will start operating. Once upon a time, Soviet architects dreamed of this project, and we are bringing it to life, — said Deputy Mayor of Moscow Maxim Liksutov.

The Big Circle Line is expected to be completed in 2022 and will comprise 31 station. 70-kilometre long, it might become the longest circle line in the world.
